And with that how to better interact in the world in way that creates less violence and devaluation of our respective humanities.

Talk it out 0128-18In continuation of our theme power is personal, we'll discuss not only how our communities can help us to be better - but how we all need each other to do better. Our work affects people we care about in intersecting ways. From the perspective of women and femmes in our life in intense discussions of harassment and abuse, and the people in our lives who don't want violence linked to their definitions of masculinity; to being present for friends & family of color in their day-to-day dealings with racism; to continuing to learn about the vast & far-reaching affects of class & material privilege in all its forms - we can, and we need to do better. Some relatively simple ways to start may be far less daunting than we would think.

After some great participation last weekend, we are heading into part 2 on the wealth & power theme. We will continue our conversation on where wealth ends up and how it gets there. Are we all responsible for the resources and wealth we are able to accumulate (or unable to get a hold on), are there "natural" forces that determine these things, OR is something else entirely going on? Should the public sector play a role in making sure we have access to resources we need-- jobs, healthcare, education, transportation-- or should they keep out of it and let private entities manage the things that effect our day-to-day lives and long term well being?

Talk It Out with Jaime
Talk it out 0730On this episode, we’ll talk about concentration of wealth and power - particularly in the context of our current political conundrum and the tensions we find with loved ones who see our political worlds differently. We’ll pose questions about how wealth and power end up where they do and who is responsible for this - is this an inevitability or something we have control over? Who do we or don’t we trust in politics, government and business? Who do we think can best manage the choices that effect our lives? Where does our understanding of this all come from?
Talk it out 0702-17We wrap up the theme from the last couple of shows - to talk or not to talk? We'll consider some questions... When does it makes sense to talk about important and tough subjects with friends, family, coworkers? Are there times where a discussion is not the best idea? Views that should not be heard or engaged with whatsoever? Do we really need to worry about all this? We'll discuss some examples of these sort conversations and situations, how to understand our own views better, and explore the most productive ways to progress in these tense times we find ourselves in.

We'll get into how to draw the line between respecting others as people and taking issue with what seems overtly problematic. How do we hold ourselves and others responsible in more nuanced situations? Try to balance productive, honest conversations, without alienating people we care about?
